The purpose of this internship is to answer the question “What innovative and inclusive recruitment and selection practice has the greatest potential impact for SDS in terms of improving outcomes for recruitment and progression of minority ethnic candidates?”
It is SDS intention that the internship will lead directly to the piloting and evaluation of recommendations which drive a measurable improvement in the experience and outcomes for candidates from a minority ethnic background. Please note that you will address the question in the context of SDS as an employer, not as a service provider.
SDS has a strategic commitment to build and harness workforce diversity, individual and organisational capability to thrive in the future of work.
Our Equality and Diversity Mainstreaming Report 2021-25 shares our employer outcome that “SDS benefits from increased diversity throughout our workforce, particularly in relation to gender, race and disability, and colleagues with protected characteristics feel heard, respected and fulfilled at work.”
Working with internal subject matter experts, including colleagues with insights from lived experience, this internship will initially review the information available within SDS on recruitment and progression of internal and external minority ethnic candidates. This will inform the key stage of the internship– researching and developing recommendations for practical and pragmatic improvements to recruitment and selection practice which will improve measurable outcomes for minority ethnic candidates.
The internship will be part of a wider project to enable a renewed organisational approach to recruitment practice to realise our ambition to build workforce diversity and in particular remove structural barriers to achieving race equality in the workplace. This will provide a vehicle for SDS to take your recommendations to implementation.
The successful candidate will work with SDS throughout the internship to ensure that their recommendations are practical and can subsequently move to pilot. It is anticipated that the PhD intern would produce the following outputs:
- Evidence based recommendations in relation to improvements in recruitment and selection practices for SDS.
- A slide pack, or similar, to share with internal SDS stakeholders and leadership groups.
- A paper which provides details on the findings, methods and recommendations.
