The University of Edinburgh is inviting applications from suitably qualified graduates for a fully-funded PhD studentship in Social Work to develop and amplify the knowledge and understanding generated by an innovative practice project, led by City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) and initially funded by the Scottish Government’s Promise Fund, to establish an effective Parents’ Panel/Advisory Group.
This research will prioritise the value of parents’ and carers’ unique experience, facilitating their engagement in their social context and acquisition of knowledge to initiate personal and social transformation within the very social systems that they have been unequally part of. This knowledge will help the local authority listen and learn from those experts by experience with the aim of making change and improvement in local systems and practice.
Methods and Data
Using creative participatory ethnography, this study will work alongside the group of 8-12 parents involved with the Parents’ Panel/Advisory Group and the CEC participation worker to explore what parents with experience of child welfare and protection systems identify as barriers and enablers to their meaningful involvement in these processes in the CEC. It will also explore how the voices of parents can be meaningfully heard and acted upon to help transform child welfare and protection systems.
Expected Research Outcomes
Findings will be used to co-create new knowledge about the experience of being involved in a Parents’ Panel, what works best in terms of supporting this panel and ensuring knowledge generated by the panel is used to drive change and innovation in child welfare and protection services in the local council. This project is timely as it provides a vital opportunity to assist CEC in their ambition to realise the value of a Parents’ Panel/ Advisory Group. The project will also develop knowledge and understanding about how best to use creative and participatory methodologies with marginalised parents’ and this will be valuable to other organisations throughout the UK and abroad.
