Partnership working is fundamental to developing social science doctoral students who are confident collaborators across sectors and disciplinary boundaries, and whose work can contribute to addressing local, national, and global challenges.
Through collaboration with a range of partners across sectors, we seek to share knowledge, develop innovative training opportunities, and generate positive impact. Operating at the national scale, SGSSS can draw on a wide range of contacts across our University network to support and add value to organisations across Scotland. SGSSS aims to expand its network of collaborative partners, building on current successful collaborations with partners across the private, public, and third sectors.
There are many opportunities for partner organisations to collaborate with SGSSS:
By hosting an SGSSS intern, your organisation can benefit from:
The scheme is designed to support links between research, society, and the economy, while also enabling researchers to gain experience in non-academic organisations, build their sector knowledge, and hone their transferable skills. You can see some examples of recent projects here.
Through the collaborative studentships scheme, organisations can work with academics to design a PhD research project. The projects need to be of benefit both to the organisation and to academic research. As the projects are collaborative, partner organisations are expected to contribute in cash or kind.
We work with a range of non-academic partner organisations to run training for researchers. Additionally, we want to ensure that local organisations can benefit from the knowledge within the PhD community by offering opportunities for partners to input and attend training, such as our Student Led Training Fund.
SGSSS also offer opportunities for our partners to access emerging research through knowledge exchange and policy events. These events focus on bringing emerging PhD research to an audience of policymakers and partners. Beginning with a pilot event in 2023, topics have included Violence Against Women and Girls (read the report here), Mental Health and Wellbeing, Population Ageing and Social Care, and Understanding Society Data.
If you would like to discuss opportunities for training or events related to accessing emerging Social Science research, please get in touch with us at team@sgsss.ac.uk.
SGSSS runs a mentoring programme in partnership with the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). The programme is designed to help PhD students explore the skills, knowledge, and experience that will support their future careers within or outside academia.
The Mentoring Programme connects PhD researchers to RSE Fellows or SGSSS PhD Alumni with a variety of professional experience in academia, the public, private, or non-profit sector.
SGSSS are always keen to hear from partners who would like to join the programme as PhD mentors. For more information about the programme and how to apply visit the SGSSS Mentoring Programme webpage:
