ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow

Dr Riyoko Shibe

University of Glasgow

My ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship examines, from historical perspective, the development of the Scottish town of Grangemouth and its oil and petrochemical industry. Europe’s first petrochemical plants were opened by BP Chemicals in 1951 in Grangemouth, and today, the town’s petroleum-based industrial complex continues to play a central role in the UK’s energy economy but fails to generate the socioeconomic security for Grangemouth that it did in the 1960s and 1970s. In 2025, Scotland’s last oil refinery in Grangemouth closed and was converted into a fuel import terminal, making the nation reliant on importing refined products. My project examines themes of fossil fuel dependency, production and consumption of petrochemicals, plastics and synthetics, and living and working in a highly polluting and capital-intensive sector.
This builds on my PhD, where I examined Grangemouth’s oil-based industrial development from the 1950s to the 2020s through 20 oral history and archival research of company, trade union and UK and Scottish government documents. I developed the ‘moral economy of noxiousness’ as a new way to analyse from historical perspective popular attitudes to economic changes. This showed how injustice in Grangemouth was formed through the petrochemical industry’s noxious features in both its environmental-chemical harms, damaging workers’ health and the wider environment, and its sociopolitical harms, causing reduced employment.

Project title:

An Energy History of Grangemouth in Scotland: Petrochemicals, Pollution and Prosperity from the 1950s to 2020s

Goals for the fellowship:

During the fellowship I will develop a monograph based on my PhD thesis: a labour, political and environmental history of Grangemouth and its oil and petrochemical industry. I will also set up a website to showcase findings from my PhD research. Grangemouth is of public interest, particularly given the closure of the oil refinery in 2025, and I hope this website will serve as a useful reference point for interested parties, especially those beyond academia.

Advice for future applicants:

While preparing my application I wanted to freshen my approach to the content I’d been engaging with for three years of PhD study. I found it useful to return to my findings, engage with new literature and adjacent fields, and reframe my original research questions from a policy angle. This helped me conceptualise a project that felt like a new phase of research and writing rather than a straightforward continuation of my PhD. This was probably more of a mindset shift rather than anything immediately obvious, but I think that allowed me to prepare what I hope was a novel, realistic proposal. Also, try to approach people who aren’t directly in your field or familiar with your work to discuss your application. I found that feedback incredibly helpful!
