Project Title

Visual Storytelling for Research

Project Details

The SDS Evaluation and Research team provides high quality, robust evidence, and insight to support SDS in delivering against its corporate goals.  This includes research on the careers service and apprenticeship programmes.

The team have four specific research projects which collect large scale data on an ongoing, or regular basis. We have written R scripts to streamline the data analysis process and to produce visually attractive outputs and visualisations. This ensures that our research is engaging to our key audiences, which include colleagues and policy makers.

These research projects (outlined below) are focussed on the career pathways of young people and apprentices which feed into service development, policy making and continuous improvement:

  • Young People’s Career Ambitions (YPCA).
  • Pupils Voice (S1-S3)
  • Pupils Voice (S4-S6)
  • Apprentice Voice

The primary aim of this internship is to support the E&R team to extend the existing creative outputs and visualisations using quantitative analysis tools for the projects outlined above.

Our research requires us to work with large, complex datasets and produce analysis and research reports for a wide range of internal client needs.  We also work with external partners and stakeholders in the wider policy, education and skills landscape to support their evidence requirements.

The focus of the internship is on creating well designed and engaging research outputs and visualisations. Experience of R, Python or other similar statistical programming tools would be beneficial.

More detailed requirements of the PhD Intern would be to:

  • Support the team to identify and suggest new and innovative ways of presenting our research outputs.
  • Help the team create attractive and engaging visuals.
  • Support the team to create several outputs such as briefing papers, slidepacks, and infographics using the data generated from the research projects.
  • Produce a range of outputs that are suitable for sharing with a wide range of delivery and policy audiences, both internal and external.
  • With the support of the team, disseminate and share the outputs across the range of audiences identified above.
