SGSSS Academic Placements

Research Services Directorate, University of Glasgow

Placement host: Research Services Directorate, University of Glasgow
Full time/part time: 3 months full-time/6 months part-time
In person/remote/hybrid: Hybrid
Placement reference: C03_3

Project Title

Multidisciplinary views on Research Integrity – an analysis of staff perspectives on good research practice and challenges faced

About the Host

Based in the Research Services Directorate, we provide central support for two key areas of research compliance. We promote Research Integrity and Good Research Paractice via training and communications, including via the university’s Good Research Practice Advisers Network. We investigate all central allegations of poor research practice and ensure funder and UK Concordat compliance for Research Integrity.

Less relevant to this placement, the other half of the team covers the Nagoya protocol, UK Government Export Controls, National Security Investment Act and Trusted Research agenda. In both cases, we work across all four Colleges and collaborate regularly with other professional services at the university.

Project Details

Our Research Integrity training for staff is mandatory and is assessed by submission of short reflective responses. We have a substantial body of data from this which gives us unique insights into all aspects of Research Integrity including discipline specific concerns and good practice. We have not been able to analyse these in sufficient depth due to constraints on staff time and we are limited in our qualitative research skills and experience. We have multiple requests for insights from this data for specific services (e.g. ethics) or Schools, as this will allow us to develop more effective internal training, support and events to promote research integrity and good research practice. This placement project will give the opportunity to develop an evidence-based analysis and create real impact from our training programme to inform institutional support for Research Integrity. Research Integrity is one of UofG’s identified Research Culture Priorities and  has a dedicated project workstream supporting ongoing developments.

We would like the researcher to help us develop a sustainable and appropriate methodology to analyse our training responses  and, having explored the dataset, co complete analysis on agreed subsets of the data in the timeframe available. We have ethical consent in place for a subset of responses so we can discuss possibilities for dissemination or publication – this would be encouraged!

Work Plan

Initial Phase:

  • Introduction to our institutional context
  • Introduction to our approach to Research Integrity training & aims for this project
  • Quantify and explore the dataset, including what data will be generated by the project
  • Assesses with the student what is a reasonable target for analysis and suitable foci (e.g. specific Schools, topics)

Analysis phase:

  • Student to explore and define methodology for qualitative analysis
  • Carry out qualitative analysis of agreed subset of the data

Results phase:

  • Share findings in suitable short report format and reusable dataset (e.g. coding data)
  • Train us on methodology to upskill our team and ensure continuity
  • Present or publish any findings

This opportunity offers the following benefits for the student:

The project allows the student to demonstrate and develop qualitative skills and data management with a large textual dataset. They will be allowed to demonstrate and practice key skills such as analysis and translation into practical insights that can enhance their employability, as well as providing development for our team from their expertise.

The student will get experience of working within a central university services team for research governance, with insight into the breadth of roles in Research Services through participation in our directorate’s meetings and activities during the placement. They will be given an insight into the “behind the Scenes” work that goes into ensuring institutions are carrying out research to a high standard and compliance with national standards. They will also be embedded in the larger Research Governance, Policy and Integrity portfolio and be in contact with teams in the remit covering REF preparations, research policy, and postgraduate researcher policy and support.

The student will also get an in-depth understanding of views on good research practice, research culture and research integrity. This will include developing awareness of disciplinary differences and wide-ranging views across our large university, useful for future interdisciplinary collaborations.
