SGSSS Steers Studentship Competition 2021/22
The deadline for Stage 1 applications (expression of interest) has now closed. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a stage 2 application on 5 November.
The Scottish Graduate School of Social Science is delighted to announce the launch of the SGSSS Steers Supervisor-led Competition 2021/22
In line with the ESRC’s core commitment to enhancing social science capability and building capacity in priority areas, the SGSSS is running a two stage supervisor-led competition awarding funded studentships in the following priority areas (steers):
- Advanced Quantitative Methods (AQM)
- Interdisciplinary research which straddles other research council remits
During the 2021/22 competition, SGSSS intend to award up to 4 studentships per steer, resulting in approximately 12 awards in total.
The first supervisor must be a member of a HEI in Scotland that is accredited to hold studentships within their disciplinary pathway, and must have undergone supervisor training within their institution within the last 5 years.
Second supervisors may work within any of the SGSSS 16 partner HEIs. We encourage applicants to consider co-supervision with different universities across our network. You can find full information about the SGSSS partner universities online here.
Please submit an application (Expressions of Interest) via our new application system, SGSSS Apply, by the deadline of 8 October at 12pm (midday).

Supervisor-led Studentships Q&A
On 28 September SGSSS hosted a Q&A session for interested applicants, which provided an overview of all three Supervisor-led Competitions. If you would like to view the recording of this session, please click here.
Due to the various complexities of the three steers (AQM, datasets and interdisciplinary) either Dr Alan Marshall or Professor Lydia Plowman have provided some additional guidance in the form of the below videos and the accompanying slides (available to download as pdf documents).
